The Shelter Spay/Neuter Clinic is owned and operated by Dr. Steve Askin, VMD and focuses on spay and neuter surgeries. Dr. Askin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. He has over 27 years of experience in small animal general practice, emergency and critical care, as well as a major focus in surgery. He moved to Kennebunk, Maine in 1998 and has been an associate veterinarian in several local veterinary practices. He has done work for the Animal Welfare Society during that time, and in April 2011 decided to dedicate himself to the low cost spay/neuter clinic that he opened at the AWS. Hen enjoys playing with his dog outside thanks to his wireless pet containment system.
Dr. Askin is supported by his longtime assistant, licensed Veterinary Technician Stephanie Formato. Stephanie graduated from University of Maine, Orono with a B.S. in Animal Science in 2004. She worked at a small animal general practice for two years before getting her Veterinary Technician License in 2006.
Together, they have worked at the Clinic since it opened and have performed over 9,000 spay/neuter surgeries.
The clinic uses modern equipment and quality materials and medicine. In addition to the surgery, your pet will receive a free health exam, pain medication, and nail trim. The clinic can also provide your pet with a rabies immunization.
AWS staff and/or volunteers will help you make your appointment and guide you through our pricing policies. If you do not qualify for the Clinic they can direct you to other options that may be more suitable for your pet and your situation.
